<div class="post_date">February 13, 2011</div>

        <div>
            <p>
	An interesting article from the <em>New York Times</em> caught my attention while I was looking at my Twitter feed. &nbsp;It was about the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/13/business/13search.html" target="_blank">dirty secrets of Search Engine Optimization</a> (SEO). This is the first time I have a seen a major publication write about SEO and reveal from a more technical perspective how it all works. &nbsp;The article was on how a retailer&#39;s SEO company manipulated Google&rsquo;s algorithm to rank #1 in many relevant keyword searches during the critical holiday shopping period. &nbsp;The basic tactic that was being used was building inbound links to their site through other computer generated sites that would link to the retailer&#39;s site. &nbsp;This is a big no no in the eyes of the Google, but it can take them awhile to catch on to these &ldquo;dirty little tactics&rdquo;.</p>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div>
	In simple terms, Google rankings are based on how many inbound links from other sites a web site receives. &nbsp;If a site has a lot of inbound links it is then thought to be a pretty good resource so it should rank well on keyword searches relevant to your site. &nbsp;Moreover, Google places a tremendous amount of emphasis if a site has inbound links from sites they think are authorities (examples would be the <em>NY Times</em>, CNN.com, etc). &nbsp;Another analogy someone once told me is to think of web sites as being in high school and you want as many inbound links from senior sites. &nbsp;Just think back to when you were a freshman and really wanted to be friends with the popular seniors. &nbsp;In many respects this is how the web works. In search engine industry terms we call getting an inbound link from a popular (senior site) link juice. &nbsp;&nbsp;</div>

<div>
	How much did you spend on your last political mailer? Does the thought of someone tossing that pamphlet in the trash still disturb you?</div>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div>
	I&rsquo;m still amazed with the number of political candidates who continue to use the postal service as part of their main communications strategy. We aren&rsquo;t sending birthday and holiday cards in the mail. We don&rsquo;t fax letters to constituents anymore. So why are we paying thousands of dollars to mail pamphlets that nearly every voting household will label as junk?</div>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div>
	The worst part of this communications strategy is that you can never accurately measure its success. Regardless of the research, no one can tell you which voters took the time to read your mailer and which voters threw it away.</div>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div>
	What if I told you your campaign could reach thousands of more voters with video and for only a fraction of that mailer budget. Your video would introduce you to voters in a personal way, give them a glimpse of how you speak and what you believe. Your video would be more entertaining and compelling with its natural sound, music and moving parts. And with the power of peer groups, there is a statistically higher chance that your video would be forwarded to undecided voters.</div>

<p>
	When you break down the Internet in simple terms, everyone is trying to sell you something. They might break into different sales pitches &ndash; food, clothes, art, love, sex, entertainment, even ideas &ndash; but when you take a closer look at each web page, you will discern that everything really boils down to your wallet and mind. Everyone wants a piece of it.</p>
<p>
	&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	And you don&#39;t have to be a business owner to understand this concept. I have friends who promote their blogs on Facebook and Twitter. It&#39;s a smart start, but this strategy needs to go a deeper if you want to grow your customer or fan base over the Internet.</p>
<p>
	&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Let me break down this idea with a restaurant example.</p>

</div>

        <div>
            <p>
	One of the biggest misconceptions about Twitter I think is that it is a social network like Facebook. &nbsp;The founders have indicated &nbsp;<a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/alltwitter/twitter-is-a-real-time-network-not-a-social-network-biz-stone-interview_b1040" target="_blank">T</a><a href="http://a href=http://www.mediabistro.com/alltwitter/twitter-is-a-real-time-network-not-a-social-network-biz-stone-interview_b1040" target="_blank">witter is not a social networ</a><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/alltwitter/twitter-is-a-real-time-network-not-a-social-network-biz-stone-interview_b1040" target="_blank">k</a>, and is in fact geared toward real-time search. &nbsp;The fact is , Twitter and Facebook are completely different in my mind. &nbsp; Twitter has turned &ldquo;Search&rdquo; (and the RSS feed) into a human generated activity with sharing information. &nbsp;More importantly, using Twitter applications like <a href="http://hootsuite.com" target="_blank">Hoot Suite</a> or <a href="http://www.tweetdeck.com/" target="_blank">Tweet Deck</a> we can search on Twitter on any topic-- even ourselves. &nbsp;From there, we can find valuable links to information that people are tweeting about topics we are interested in. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div>
	What will get me a bit fired up is when I read <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-why-google-needs-to-buy-twitter-immediately-2010-9" target="_blank">Google should buy Twitter</a> because of the amount of money being poured into Facebook. &nbsp;These two platforms are completely different and do not compete against each other -- because Twitter is not a social network. &nbsp;So that logic makes no sense. &nbsp;Now if an analyst wrote Google should buy Twitter to extend its Search services I would see a bit more of the logic, than just the arms race mentality that is now going on between Google and Facebook, along with reading the ramblings of an analyst that is just getting upset that Google is not buying Twitter to jack up its stock price. &nbsp;</div>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div>
	However, Google has already started to bake in real-time relevant Tweets into its search stream (its good to see the Internet is still &ldquo;open&rdquo; in that regard). &nbsp;The challenge for Twitter I think will be how it can generate revenue as it costs continue to rise to support this service. &nbsp;Both Google and Facebook receive most (if not all) of their income on targeted ads that appear on the side of the screen. &nbsp; Much of the discussion around Twitter involves the same thought process, which is why you are starting to see &ldquo;sponsored tweets&rdquo;. &nbsp;</div>

<br>

            <p>
	This past year <em>Wired</em> magazine declared that the Internet was dead. &nbsp;And usually at the end of the year someone declares blogging dead. &nbsp;To be honest I have not see the posts yet, but have seen the <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/search/blogging%20is%20dead" target="_blank">chatter on Twitter</a>. &nbsp;For much the same reason the Internet was declared dead, blogging is being declared dead due to the rise of Twitter and Tumblr. &nbsp;</p>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div>
	The fact is blogging is not dead, and neither is the Internet. &nbsp; One of the most popular online property&#39;s is a blog (<a href="http://nymag.com/news/features/establishments/68506/" target="_blank">Gawke</a>r), The platforms might change, but the underlining principles behind blogging (and the Web) will never change. &nbsp;Blogging is the 21st century printing press that allows anyone to be publishers. &nbsp;And publishing has been around since we have written on cave walls. &nbsp;</div>

	I know it has been a long hiatus since the last post. &nbsp;Rather than say I have been busy, I will just say I have been really busy.</p>
<p>
	&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Lately what I have been thinking about is what most people think about in this industry -- what are the latest trends, where is this all going? &nbsp; You would not think that New York City is the epicenter for tech or for creating new concepts, but it has always been the media capital of the world. &nbsp; To say that digital media is not important for any company is an understatement, which is why we are seeing so much activity from start-ups in New York. &nbsp;And I suspect this will grow even larger in the next 24 months as the adjustment to the economy set in.</p>

	I could not help put quickly respond the main article in this month&#39;s <em>Wired</em> magazine, which proclaims the <a href="http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/08/ff_webrip/all/1">death of the Web</a>. Wired&rsquo;s proclamation&nbsp;is based on the rise of applications that now invade our daily lives which use the Internet, but do not require browsers. &nbsp;Most of this being sparked by the rise of the iPhone and its app store. &nbsp;And there is no doubt applications that use Internet technology as a platform have gained serious traction with the increased use of smartphones, social media, the iPad, and web enabled DVD players and TV&#39;s that can stream the Internet. &nbsp;But I am not about to bury the Web just yet for various reasons. &nbsp;It seems any new service that bypasses a Google search is considered that new new thing. &nbsp;Sure it might be, but the Web still has a plenty of staying power. &nbsp;</p>

	The political season is fast up on us. &nbsp;Over the years there has been a rise in politicians using digital media strategies to get their message across -- and win. &nbsp;What is becoming more of a trend is candidates using search engine marketing (Google Adwords) tactics with campaigns trying to buy up keywords of their opponents names. &nbsp;In fact <a href="http://adage.com/article?article_id=145298" target="_blank">Advertising Age </a>has an interesting article on this new trend in politics. &nbsp; &nbsp;This gives me a bit of chuckle because these are the same strategies some companies use as well, and I find it somewhat self-defeating because since each company (or opponent) are just driving up each other&rsquo;s costs. &nbsp;</p>

</div>

        <div>
            <p>
	Since launching our site some of our friends have asked if Barrow means anything other than the fact it is the street I live on here in New York? We thought about a lot of names, but for some reason Barrow kept sticking out at me because it is such a unique and beautiful street in New York -- with townhouses dating back to the 1800&rsquo;s , original cobble stone streets, and actual remnants of an old village square <a href="http://newyorkdailyphoto.blogspot.com/2006/10/39-41-commerce-street.html" target="_blank">where it intersects with Commerce Street</a>. &nbsp; &nbsp;It does not get more vintage New York than that.</p>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div>
	As we discussed names for our enterprise, it also turns out a prominent landscape artist named <a href="http://whitemountainart.com/Biographies/bio_jdb.htm" target="_blank">John</a><a href="http://whitemountainart.com/Biographies/bio_jdb.htm" target="_blank"> Dodgson Barrow</a> lived here back in the 1800&rsquo;s . &nbsp;While I am not sure if this is who Barrow Street is named after, it is clear he did have some influence. &nbsp; Then it was a few weeks ago I was reading &ldquo;<em><i>The Universe on T-Shirt: The Quest for the Theory of Everything</i></em><i>&rdquo;</i>, by <a href="http://www.danfalk.ca/universe-on-a-t-shirt-the-quest-for-the-theory-of-everything" target="_blank">Dan Falk </a>an excellent book on the history of physics, where the book opens with the following quote from the physicist <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_D._Barrow" target="_blank">John D. Barrow</a>.</div>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div style="margin-left: 40px; ">
	<em><i>&ldquo;The longed-for Theory of Everything promises to provide the final discovery after which all physics will become the refinement of its content, the simplification of its explanation....Eventually, it will appear on T-Shirts.&quot;</i></em></div>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div>
	In essence what Barrow was trying to do was explain physics in simple terms, which is our goal with designing and managing websites. So maybe with choosing the name Barrow, we were on to something, due to some pretty interesting dudes with this last name, that just happened to represent our philosophy when it came to digital. Coincidence, I think not. &nbsp;And it is far better than saying that we named it after <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrow,_Alaska" target="_blank">Barrow, Alaska</a>&nbsp;one of the northern most cities in the United States, isolated from pretty much everything. &nbsp;</div>

            <p>
	Engagement is a popular word when talking about websites. &nbsp; There are many goals when you launch a website, but a key goal is to engage visitors to drive conversions (leads, purchases, comments). &nbsp;However isn&rsquo;t this stating the obvious? &nbsp;</p>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div>
	I bring this up because I was recently asked what my favorite websites were. &nbsp;When I gave this some thought I realized it was not websites that were visually stunning (which is what this person wanted me to say), but it was the sites I was able to find the information I needed or the ones where I was able to interact with others by providing comments because we shared a common interest. &nbsp;It other words I like sites that have substance -- which I think most people do as well. &nbsp;So I would argue even finding the information/community you are looking for is a conversion. &nbsp;Actually a very important one because your site is then viewed as a resource, which the search engines like a lot and it keeps people coming back for more.</div>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div>
	Taking this one step further the rise of social networking sites have exploded because they allow us to communicate with our friends and share information from what we deem as a trusted sources. &nbsp;Rather then turning to Google, you can use Twitter to find information as you follow people that share your interests or you can go to a blog&nbsp;&nbsp;to obtain that information and see what your peers are working on and thinking. &nbsp;The important point though is social networking sites are about engagement. &nbsp;&nbsp;</div>

<div>
	One thing I am probably guilty of doing is getting a bit too technical when I speak with clients. Not all the time, and it is not because I want to confuse people, but I get really excited when I can show someone how all this stuff works. &nbsp;I remember having that ah ha moment when I discovered how websites work and are developed. &nbsp;As a result I always have a habit of showing people what the source code looks like for a website. &nbsp;To do this in your browser (it does not matter which one, they all have this feature) just go to View &gt; Source. &nbsp;This will bring up all of the web code for a website. &nbsp;</div>
<div>
	&nbsp;</div>
<div>
	I know most people do not care about the source code of a website (that is something for us to worry about), but at the same time having a basic understanding of how a web browser renders your website&rsquo;s code can go a long way into gaining a good idea of how the web and search engines actually work. &nbsp;The reason this is important is so you can understand how people can find your site when they are searching the web. &nbsp;The code that sits behind a web browser not only tells the browser how to display the site visually, but that code is what is crawled/indexed by the search engines, not what you see the browser displaying. &nbsp;</div>
